A photograph might be able to tell a thousand words, but it can never tell a whole story. Can anything really tell a whole story?
I myself like this photograph very much… There are a lot of elements in this image that occur frequently in my photographs:
- People taking pictures
- American car from the seventies
- A Red American Car from the Seventies
- Young man with nice legs
- Suburbia
- Interesting shadows
- Shooting against the light
But this photograph does have an interesting story that is not at all evident, and the real mystery is what these two men are taking a picture of. One might think that they may be taking a photo of me, but I don’t even know the older gentleman on the left.
This was the Fourth of July, or Independence Day in Central Illinois, in a town called Dixon. I was going back to Chicago with two friends from a weekend at another friend’s house in the countryside in Western Illinois when we spotted a sign on the highway that led to a tourist attraction in Dixon, that seemed important on a national holiday like Independence Day.
These two men were not photographing me, even though I might have ended up in their photographs, but they were actually taking a picture of the boyhood home of former president Ronald Reagan. It was really remarkable to see how this very important man had grown up in such modest surroundings, to imagine him playing on this grass, perhaps even tossing a football to friends on that same street, and then one day becoming the most powerful man on the planet.
American Dream indeed. But perhaps a nightmare for so many.

Ein Bild mag vielleicht mehr sagen als tausend Worte, aber es kann nie eine ganze Geschichte erzählen. Kann überhaupt irgendetwas wirklich eine ganze Geschichte erzählen?
Ich selber mag dieses Foto sehr gern… Viele der Elemente in diesem Bild kommen häufig in meinen Fotos vor:
- Leute, die Fotos machen
- Ein amerikanisches Auto aus den Siebzigern
- Ein Rotes Amerikanisches Auto Aus Den Siebzigern
- Ein junger Mann mit hübschen Beinen
- Die Vorstadt
- Interessante Schatten
- Gegen das Licht zu fotografieren
Dieses Foto allerdings hat eine interessante Geschichte, die überhaupt nicht offensichtlich ist und das wahre Rätsel ist, was diese beiden Männer fotografieren. Man könnte denken, dass sie mich fotografieren, aber den älteren Herrn links kenne ich nicht mal.
Es war der Vierte Juli, oder Unabhängigkeitstag, im Zentrum von Illinois, in einer Stadt namens Dixon. Ich war auf dem Weg zurück nach Chicago mit zwei Freunden, mit denen ich das Wochenende bei einem anderen Freund auf dem Land im Westen von Illinois verbracht hatte, als wir ein Schild auf dem Highway sahen, das zu einer Touristenattraktion in Dixon führte, die an einem Nationalfeiertag wie dem Unabhängigkeitstag wichtig zu sein schien.
Diese beiden Männer fotografierten nicht mich, obwohl ich im Endeffekt möglicherweise auf ihren Fotos zu sehen bin, sondern sie fotografierten das Haus, wo der ehemalige Präsident Ronald Reagan seine Kindheit verbracht hatte. Es war wirklich erstaunlich zu sehen, dass dieser sehr wichtige Mann in solch bescheidenen Verhältnissen aufgewachsen war, ihn sich vorzustellen, wie er im Gras spielte, vielleicht sogar Freunden auf genau dieser Straße einen Fußball zuwarf, und dann eines Tages der mächtigste Mann des Planeten wurde.
Wahrlich der amerikanische Traum. Für viele aber vielleicht eher ein Alptraum
