If only the early colonialists, like Cristóbal Colon (Cristopher Columbus) himself, when they landed on a beautiful Caribbean island like Hispaniola, they found the indigenous people as beautiful and exotic as the flowers of these islands, then maybe the world today would be a much more beautiful place to be.
Instead, Colon and his royal Spanish sponsors colonized the island and according to most historical accounts, caused the total genocide of the original inhabitants, the Taino Indians. The demise of this people came from a combination of European diseases to which they were not immune, and a slow and excruciating death by total servitude and slavery.
I am amazed how the powerful can use language to benefit their own positions of power. Colon is said to have “discovered” the New World, where in fact the New World was already inhabited by ancient sophisticated peoples numbering in the millions. Alas they were not sophisticated enough to have the appropriate weapons to defend themselves against the much better armed, greedy invaders.
This is a flower. It is a flower from the island of Martinique, which was also colonized by the French, and is in fact a “Département Outre Mer” of France, or basically part of the French Republic Overseas. But even there, and even today, the European descendants are much wealthier and more powerful than the poorer indigenous peoples, or the African descendants of slaves that were brought in for further enrichment of the white people.
I have tried to research this flower, but have not been able to find any more information on it. I took it in the “Jardin de Balata” on the Island of Martinique sometime in the early 1990’s.

Hätten doch nur die frühen Kolonialisten, wie Cristóbal Colon (Christoph Kolumbus) selber, als sie auf den schönen karibischen Inseln wie Hispaniola landeten, die Eingeborenen so schön und exotisch gefunden wie die Blumen auf diesen Inseln; dann wäre die Welt heute vielleicht ein viel angenehmerer Ort.
Stattdessen kolonisierten Colon and seine Sponsoren aus dem spanischen Königshaus die Insel und laut der meisten historischen Berichte waren sie verantwortlich für den Völkermord an den ursprünglichen Einwohnern, den Taino-Indianern. Der Niedergang dieses Volks basierte auf einer Kombination europäischer Krankheiten, gegen die es nicht immun war, und eines langsamen und qualvollen Todes durch totale Zwangsarbeit und Versklavung.
Ich finde es erstaunlich, wie die Mächtigen Sprache benutzen können, um ihre Machtposition weiter auszubauen. Man sagt, Colon habe die Neue Welt „entdeckt“, wo diese Neue Welt doch eigentlich schon von Millionen bewohnt war, die zu alten kultivierten Völkern gehörten. Leider waren sie jedoch nicht kultiviert genug, um die passenden Waffen zu haben, mit denen sie sich hätten verteidigen können gegen die viel besser bewaffneten, gierigen Eindringlinge.
Das hier ist eine Blume. Es ist eine Blume von der Insel Martinique, die ebenfalls von den Franzosen kolonisiert wurde und ein „Départment Outre Mer“ von Frankreich ist, also im Grunde Teil der französischen Republik in Übersee. Aber selbst da und selbst heute sind die Leute europäischer Abstammung viel wohlhabender und mächtiger als die ärmeren Eingeborenen oder diejenigen, die von afrikanischen Sklaven abstammen, die dorthin verfrachtet wurden, um die Weißen noch reicher zu machen.
Ich habe versucht herauszufinden, was für eine Blume das ist, aber ich habe nichts finden können. Ich machte das Bild im „Jardin de Balata“ auf Martinique irgendwann in den frühen 1990ern.
