Two of the most lucrative industries in the United States and perhaps in the developed world make most of their profits from video or computer based images, pornography and video-games, aka sex and violence.
If one were to look at the positive side of things, perhaps there is less real violence due to the presence of violent entertainment. Many critics cite that viewing of violence, or participating in violent video games, particularly by children, would cause them to be less sensitive to actual violence and become violent themselves.
Even though I do not like these types of games myself, I sometimes think of the world as a pressure cooker, ready to explode at any moment unless some steam is let out every now and then. Perhaps these games might release some steam out of natural violent tendencies in younger people so that they may not act them out in real. That would be an interesting research project.
In other parts of the world, where video technology is not as readily affordable, people resort to other forms of violent gaming which are normally very cruel to either other humans, but most often to animals. Of course, this does not mean that the presence of video games has eliminated violent and cruel entertainment in societies that do have access to modern technology.
In Vieques, Puerto Rico, there is not much to do on a Sunday, specially if it’s not a perfect Caribbean sunny day, except perhaps go to church or to the cockfights. It seems like every house on the island has a fighting cock. These cocks are so aggressive, perhaps through breeding or incitement, that they crow very loudly all night long in relentless cacophony. It was almost impossible for me to sleep without ear plugs, as thousands of these roosters screamed at their prospective rivals in the ring.
Not only do the owners capitalize on these aggressions for entertainment and gambling, but they supplant the fighters with lethal sharp blades on their feet so that when they do attack each other, it can sometimes be very painful and even deadly. The ritual is even more disgusting when the men exchange their winnings in dollars over the body of a rooster who lies trembling in stupor over the loss of either honor or too much blood.

Zwei der lukrativsten Industrien in den Vereinigten Staaten und vielleicht in allen Industrienationen machen ihren Profit mit Video- oder Computerbildern: Pornografie und Videospiele, auch bekannt als Sex und Gewalt.
Wenn man es positiv sehen möchte, könnte man behaupten, dass es vielleicht weniger wirkliche Gewalt gibt dank der gewalttätigen Unterhaltung. Viele Kritiker sind allerdings der Meinung, dass das Anschauen von Gewalt oder das Spielen von brutalen Videospielen besonders bei Kindern eine geringere Sensibilität gegenüber tatsächlicher Gewalt auslöst und sie deshalb selber gewalttätig werden.
Auch wenn ich selber diese Art von Spielen nicht mag, halte ich die Welt manchmal für einen Schnellkochtopf, bereit jeden Moment zu explodieren, es sei denn man lässt immer mal ein wenig Dampf ab. Vielleicht bauen diese Spiele einen Teil der natürlichen Gewaltbereitschaft jüngerer Leute ab, so dass sie sie nicht wirklich ausleben müssen. Das wäre mal ein interessantes Forschungsprojekt.
In anderen Teilen der Welt, wo man sich Videotechnologie nicht so einfach leisten kann, behelfen sich die Leute mit anderen Formen von brutalen Spielen, bei denen sich normalerweise eine enorme Gewalt gegen andere Menschen, aber häufiger gegen Tiere richtet. Natürlich heißt das nicht, dass das Vorhandensein von Videospielen andere Arten der brutalen Unterhaltung in Gesellschaften mit Zugang zu moderner Technologie eingedämmt hat.
In Vieques, Puerto Rico, gibt es sonntags nicht viel zu tun, besonders wenn die Sonne nicht scheint, wie man es von perfekten Tagen in der Karibik erwartet, so dass man nur in die Kirche oder zu Hahnenkämpfen gehen kann. Es scheint, als habe jedes Haus auf der Insel einen Kampfhahn. Diese Hähne sind so aggressiv, möglicherweise durch Zucht oder Anstachelung, dass sie während der gesamten Nacht laut krähen in einer unnachgiebigen Kakophonie. Ich empfand es als beinahe unmöglich, ohne Ohrenstöpsel zu schlafen, während Tausende dieser Hähne ihre potenziellen Gegner anschrieen.
Die Besitzer nutzen diese Aggressionen nicht nur, um aus dem Entertainment durch Wetten Kapital zu schlagen, sondern statten die Kämpfer auch mit tödlich scharfen Messern an ihren Füßen aus, so dass es manchmal extrem schmerzhaft sein kann, wenn sie einander attackieren; es kann sogar zum Tod führen. Dieses Ritual ist noch widerwärtiger, wenn die Männer ihre Gewinne in Dollars über dem Körper eines Hahns austauschen, der zitternd daniederliegt, benommen vom Verlust entweder seiner Ehre oder seines Bluts.
