It’s not everyday that I get to see something or meet someone that would make an enormous impression. I was somewhat impressed when I met Layard when we were both working at a wedding party, me as DJ and him as a waiter. We did not speak during the event itself, but I had noticed him walking around the room with his long blond hair and his tuxedo. We met accidentally in the hallway as we were both leaving at the end of the night.
Several months later I received an email from him inviting me to his dance performance. Not knowing what to expect, I went to the John Houseman Theatre on 42nd Street to see the last performance there before the old theatre was to be torn down to be replaced by a new, more commercially viable building.
I was among a small audience of about 25 people, and I sat through three modern dance performances by young dancers before Layard appeared on stage, tip-toeing and bouncing. Thus began one of the most visceral and overwhelming dance performances I had ever seen. And I had seen many of the great dance companies in the past, and this surpassed all of them.
It is nearly impossible to describe in words Layard’s interpretation of Scottish Dancer and Choreographer Deborah Haye’s “The Ridge”, but it is a performance full of extraordinary energy, both physical and emotional. I am very fortunate and happy that Layard and I have become friends, and that we will collaborate on some projects together, where he will dance, and I will photograph.

Es kommt nicht jeden Tag vor, dass etwas oder jemand einen enormen Eindruck bei mir hinterlässt. Ich war aber ziemlich beeindruckt, als ich Layard auf einer Hochzeitsfeier traf, bei der wir beide arbeiteten, ich als DJ, er als Kellner. Wir unterhielten uns nicht während der Feier selber, aber er war mir aufgefallen, wie er mit seinem langen blonden Haar und seinem Smoking durch den Raum schritt. Wir trafen uns zufällig im Flur, als wir beide am Ende der Nacht nach Hause gingen.
Ein paar Monate später erhielt ich eine Email von ihm, in der er mich zu seiner Tanzperformance einlud. Ich hatte keine Ahnung, was mich erwartete, als ich zum John Houseman Theatre in der 42nd Street ging, um die letzte Vorstellung dort zu sehen, bevor das alte Theater abgerissen werden sollte, um durch ein neues Gebäude ersetzt zu werden, das rentabler sein sollte.
Ich war Teil eines kleinem Publikums von etwa 25 Personen und ich ließ drei Modern Dance Performances von jungen Tänzern über mich ergehen, bevor Layard auf der Bühne auftauchte, auf Zehenspitzen und hüpfend. So begann eine der emotionalsten und überwältigendsten Tanzperformances, die ich je gesehen habe. Und ich hatte zuvor viele der großen Tanztruppen gesehen; das hier übertraf sie alle.
Es ist fast unmöglich, Layards Interpretation von “The Ridge” von der schottischen Tänzerin und Choreographin Deborah Haye mit Worten zu beschreiben, aber es war eine außergewöhnlich energetische Performance, sowohl körperlich als auch emotional. Ich empfinde es als großes Glück, dass Layard und ich inzwischen Freunde sind und dass wir an gemeinsamen Projekten arbeiten werden, bei denen er tanzt und ich fotografiere.
